standout classic Rioja producer also making Cava

about Muga are classic Rioja, based in Haro in the train district of the historic centre of the region’s production. They merge traditional and modern trends: the red wines are aged in both American and French oak. The Cava is a welcome presence in their line up.

Conde de Haro 2021 ($28)

70% Viura, 30% Chardonnay. 24 months on the lees. Quite a rich style, with a fruity profile—citrus and stone fruits—complemented by a creamy, toasty, lees-driven palate. Rare to find Cava from Rioja outside the Spanish market, and this is an interesting alternative to Cava from Catalunya.
