standout organic, natural Extremadura producer

about the Romero family has been making wine in Extremadura since the 1950s, when they started supplying a local bar. Vineyards were expanded in the 1970s (now 13ha), with plantings of indigenous and international varieties. Juan Leandro Romero has moved production towards natural wine, very unusually for a small, conservative region.

Cantos de Sirena Pét-Nat (€14)

90% Beba, 10% Gewürztraminer. Beba is a golden-coloured variety originally from Andalucia, and mostly grown solely in Extremadura, often for table wine. Together with Gewürz, an interesting choice for a sparkling wine. The two varieties are initially fermented separately, and then bottled together to complete fermentation. Golden and tropical, medium-dry, and a little too much on the funky side.
