standout new development in Catalan sparkling wine
about part of Catalan/Cava heritage, from the Torello Mata family. Alongside his father and aunt, the winery was founded by Agustí Torello Roca in 2013. They initially joined the Clássic Penedès movement, but became part of Corpinnat in 2025. The wines are very difficult to distinguish from a good quality Cava (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing).
wines tasted
Brut Nature 2023 ($25)
55% Macabeu, 45% Xarel-lo. 20 months ageing. If AT Roca weren’t part of Corpinnat, this wine would simply be classed as a perfectly good if unmemorable Cava: smoky, earthy, nutty, toasty, with lively acid.
Brut Nature Rosé 2023 ($26)
50/50 Macabeu and Garnatxa. A much more interesting wine, pleasingly fruity, floral, and herbal. Also 20 months on the lees. More Garnatxa in Spanish sparkling wine please!
