standout sparkling Chenin Blanc from Clarksburg

about the Silt brand was created by Muddy Boot Wine, also in Clarksburg, and is named after the local soils. A huge range of (expensive) wines is made, including tank method, traditional method, and pét-nat sparkling wines, all from Chenin Blanc, and a medium-dry sparkling rosé. The wines are friendly but not especially memorable.

wines tasted

Pétillant-Naturel Clarksburg 2020 ($40)

It’s always interesting to try an older pét-nat to see how a wine which is designed to be drunk young has developed. However, this wine was quite flat and overly mature: pét-nat really should be drunk straightaway. (Tasted May 2025.)

Pétillant-Naturel Clarksburg 2024 ($40)

Much fresher and more immediate (tasted May 2025), with waxy aromas characteristic of Chenin Blanc, and a rich, spicy palate. More promising than the 2020.

Charmat Method Chenin Blanc Clarksburg ($36)

Fruity, juicy, and aromatic, but not that complex. Very drinkable on a summer’s afternoon, but hugely overpriced. 3g/l residual sugar, though feels like more.
