standout sparkling Chenin Blanc from Vouvray and Montlouis-sur-Loire

about François Chidaine inherited 4ha of vineyards in Montlouis-sur-Loire from his father in 1989; he now owns 30ha across Touraine, including Vouvray (those wines are labelled Vin de France). Certified biodynamic since 2003, Chidaine has pushed the reputation of Montlouis from under the shadow of neighbouring Vouvray to an appellation of great interest in its own right. A couple of sparkling wines made.

wines tasted

Pétillant Vin de France 2019 (€20)

Chenin Blanc from Vouvray, typical of the lightly sparkling style of the area. Three years on the lees, which have been well integrated into a mature style. Light lees, spice aromas, very fresh, light, with high chewy acidity, and green fruit aromas. Wears its maturity well. (Tasted May 2025.)

Brut Nature Montlouis-sur-Loire 2021 (€21)

Twelve months on the lees, from vines grown on clay, flint, and tuffeau soils. Feels more a lees-influenced sparkling wine even if it’s not aged as long as the Pétillant, with mature bruised apple and pear aromas and a creamy texture balanced by high, vibrant acidity. A great example of sparkling Chenin at the price.
