standout maverick Long Island producer

about Walter Channing is both an artist and a venture capitalist, as well as owner of Channing Daughters. He first planted Chardonnay in 1982 on Long Island, and since then just about every grape variety imaginable has been planted on the property in the Hamptons. Since 1995 the viticulturist has been Larry Perrine, and the winemaker Christopher Tracy has been there since 2001. The number of wines (and vermouths) made can make them a little unpredictable, but always interesting. Several pét-nats made.

Pétillant-Naturel (vintage) ($29)

Eleven pét-nats are made from various varieties, as well as a pét-nat cider. The pét-nat itself is very typical of Channing Daughters: you’re not quite sure what you’re going to get when opening a bottle. Also very typical of pét-nat, with cider, apple, tart character.
