standout largest producer in Champagne

about Moët-et-Chandon controls 25% of all champagne production, owning various other labels such as Veuve Cliquot and Krug, as well as Dom Pérignon which they first launched in 1936. Although they oversee quality production for those wines, their own range is uninspiring especially in comparison to similarly priced champagnes. At the same time, they do more than anyone to associate Champagne with luxury, partnering with celebrities and pointedly positioning Champagne as a lifestyle choice.

wines tasted

“Impérial” NV ($45)

A blend of 100 wines, a roughly even blend of the three Champagne varieties though a little less Chardonnay. 20-30% reserve wines. 7g/l dosage. A recently opened bottle remained unfinished, a comparison to Prosecco made.

“Impérial” Rosé NV ($55)

Literally a pink version of the “Impérial”: roughly the same blend, the same dosage, and equally uninspiring.
