standout Slovenian producer exploring traditional winemaking methods

about based in the Slovenian region of Goriska Brda, the current winery, family owned for generations, is run by Katja Kabaj and Jean-Michel Morel. Grape varieties are local to Slovenia; winemaking approach is natural; qveri (amphorae) as well as French oak barrels are used for often long ageing. Still wines not tasted so hard to make an overall assessment, but the pét-nat is well-made but funky.

“San Lurinz Hyrda” Pétillant-Naturel 2022 ($30)

Blend of Friulana, Rebula, and Malvasia. This is a very natural wine, funky and cider like: an acquired taste. Nevertheless, the fruit flavours are very pure.
